Impact of Low Rotational Inertia on Power System Stability and Operation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Large-scale deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) has led to significant generation shares of variable RES in power systems worldwide. RES units, notably inverterconnected wind turbines and photovoltaics (PV) that as such do not provide rotational inertia, are effectively displacing conventional generators and their rotating machinery. The traditional assumption that grid inertia is sufficiently high with only small variations over time is thus not valid for power systems with high RES shares. This has implications for frequency dynamics and power system stability and operation. Frequency dynamics are faster in power systems with low rotational inertia, making frequency control and power system operation more challenging. This paper investigates the impact of low rotational inertia on power system stability and operation, contributes new analysis insights and offers mitigation options for low inertia impacts.

The safe operation of power system depends on its stability and security supply in all times. The dynamic instability (small signal instability) is one of phenomena that results in power system instability and has been discussed as a challenge in power system control and operation from a long time ago. Commonly the dynamic instability appears as undamped low frequency electromechanical oscillat...

Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines with traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control provide no inertia response under system frequency events. Recently, the DFIG wind turbines have been equipped with virtual inertia controller (VIC) for supporting power system frequency stability. However, the conventional VICs with fixed gain have negative effects on inter-ar...

Reliability investigation has always been one of the most important issues in power systems planning. The outages rate in power system reflects the fact that more attentions should be paid on reliability indices to supply consumers with uninterrupted power. Using reliability indices in economic dispatch problem may lead to the system load demand with high reliability and low probability of powe...

The interline power flow controller (IPFC) is a concept of the FACTS controller for series compensation which can inject a voltage with controllable magnitude and phase angle among multi lines. This paper proposes a novel IPFC-Based Damping Neuro-control scheme using PSO for damping oscillations in a power system to improve power system stability. The addition of a supplementary controll...
